Impact of war, natural disasters and other threats on religious buildings: problem analysis

Religious buildings represent one of the most vulnerable segments of architectural and cultural heritage, as they simultaneously embody a material structural foundation and a profound spiritual and symbolic value for society. Under modern conditions, they are exposed to a wide spectrum of threats, including direct military actions, natural disasters, technological accidents, and processes associated with global climate change. Such impacts lead to damage of structural elements, partial or complete destruction of buildings, loss of authentic finishing materials, destruction of interiors, and the loss or deterioration of sacred artefacts. Physical damage is accompanied by deep social and spiritual consequences: the symbolic identity of the community is undermined, access to cultural and religious practices is restricted, and the emotional resilience of the population declines – particularly sharply in wartime.
The most extensive damage occurs during armed conflict, when religious buildings become targets of shelling, airstrikes, fires, and deliberate acts of destruction. As a result, structural systems fail, architectural details are obliterated, and restoration becomes technically complicated and financially burdensome. At the same time, natural disasters – earthquakes, floods, hurricanes – exert an equally significant impact. Seismic shocks, inundations, and extreme weather events cause structural deformation, loss of spatial stability, weakening of foundations, and disruption of the building’s equilibrium. In many cases, these events amplify the damage previously inflicted by war or technological factors, creating a combined destructive effect.
A critical issue is also the influence of technological accidents and climate change. Fires, explosions, aggressive environments, and elevated humidity cause gradual material degradation, corrosion, microcracking, and loss of structural strength. Rising sea levels, increasingly frequent hurricanes, and temperature fluctuations are particularly dangerous for ancient structures located in coastal regions.
Systematization of the identified threats shows that their impact is multifactorial, and the degree of damage is determined by a combination of the building’s historical age, structural characteristics, location conditions, and the intensity of external loads. Equally important are the moral consequences: the destruction of sacred sites generates social depression, loss of cultural continuity, and spiritual disorientation within the community.
